Lamar County’s Environmental Health Office monitors and addresses threats to health and safety posed by physical, chemical and biological factors in our natural and built environments. The county office monitors and enforces policies and programs to reduce environmental hazards, handles inspections and complaints, and monitors safety concerns in the areas listed below.

WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. Located in the same building as the health department, the Lamar County WIC and Nutrition Center stands ready to support low-income families in taking care of their health through the services Georgia WIC offers: nutritious foods, health education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care.
This free program is available to pregnant women, new moms, breastfeeding moms, and parents or guardians who are the sole provider of children under age five and meet the income and nutritional requirements. The WIC program also provides participants with individually tailored healthy food vouchers that can be used at thousands of stores through Georgia’s eWIC program, the state’s electronic food system for issuing food benefits.

The Lamar County Health Department’s Dental Clinic offers quality, affordable dental services for children, pregnant women, and adults. We accept all forms of Georgia Medicaid coverage (Amerigroup, CareSource, PeachState, PeachCare for Kids, etc.), but we do not accept Medicare or private insurance for dental services. Our dental clinics also offer affordable rates for uninsured patients who are within 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Safe Kids Car Seat Education
Since 2007, at least 180 children in Georgia who were involved in crashes were saved from serious injury or death by car seats, booster seats and safety education. We offer car seat education by appointment for parents and caregivers. Please call 770.358.1483 ext. 4 for more information.
Promoting Women’s Health and Healthy Babies Initiative
Low birthweight infants (born weighing less than 5.5 pounds) face higher rates of infant mortality, developmental challenges and long-term disabilities. We are working to improve the healthy of our women of child bearing age and reduce the number of low birthweight babies born to Lamar County residents by partnering with social and health care agencies to provide tobacco cessation education, nutrition and healthy lifestyle education, assistance with maternal stress management, and referral to affordable health and dental care.

Dementia Screenings
The Lamar County Health Department recently was selected as one of three health departments in Georgia to serve as telehealth appointment locations through Georgia Memory Net, a non-profit, statewide program developed to address the growing need for Georgians to have earlier access to diagnostic services closer to home.
After receiving a primary care doctor’s referral, an individual can now come with a loved one to a telehealth appointment at the Lamar County Health Department, where a private, designated area is available for them to visit with a specialist through an online video call.
The health department’s clinical staff can help patients log in to their appointment and is available to support them throughout the visit. If the specialist decides any lab work is needed, it can be performed during the same visit at the health department.
