Local health departments to offer free breast exam events
In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. several county health departments in District 4 Public Health will offer free breast exams for women ages 21 to 64.
The Lamar County Health Department, 100 Academy Drive in Barnesville, will offer free breast exams on Friday, Oct. 13. To schedule an appointment, call (770) 358-1483, option 4.
The Pike County Health Department, 541 Griffin St. in Zebulon, will hold its free breast exam event on Monday, Oct. 23. Door-prize drawings and refreshments will be available throughout the day. To schedule an appointment, call (770) 567-8972, option 0.
The Upson County Health Department, 314 E. Lee St. in Thomaston, will provide free breast exams from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26. Appointments for the event are encouraged, but walk-ins are also accepted. To schedule an appointment, call (706) 647-7148.
After receiving a breast exam, eligible women can also be referred for a free mammogram at a later date through the health department’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP). More information on BCCP is available at www.district4health.org/breast-and-cervical-prevention.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in woman after skin cancer, according to the CDC. It is estimated that about one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
