Benefits

A collage of three images: people preparing food with a cookbook, assorted fresh fruits and vegetables with berries in a heart-shaped bowl, and a person breastfeeding a baby on a couch. : District 4 Public Health

District 4’s WIC program promotes nutrition, breastfeeding and overall health for women, infants and children.

Nutrition Education

Early nutrition is critical for healthy development in infants and children, as well as for preventing chronic health problems in adults. The WIC program provides several ways to get educated on the best nutrition for your family to reach these goals. You can participate in interactive online courses that help you understand which foods can give you the vitamins and nutrients you need. You can also meet one-on-one with WIC staff to discuss your current nutritional intake and how to cultivate healthier eating habits.

For WIC participants, complete your online education courses.

Virtual Cooking Demonstrations

As part of our nutrition education program, we invite you to join our live virtual cooking classes! Our experienced staff will show you how to prepare easy, healthy, and delicious recipes that your whole family can enjoy.

Parents and children are encouraged to participate together and learn valuable cooking skills, kitchen and food safety practices, and creative ways to prepare meals using your WIC-approved foods.

Food Benefits and WIC Shopping

WIC benefits help moms when they are grocery shopping, providing them with free, healthy foods that are full of calcium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C and protein to meet their nutritional needs. The food benefits include fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products and pantry staples, such as:

  • Fresh produce
  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Eggs
  • Fruit and vegetable juices

  • Peanut butter
  • Iron-fortified breakfast cereals (hot and cold)
  • Infant cereals
  • Infant foods
  • Iron-fortified infant formula

You can shop with Georgia eWIC benefits card at your favorite local grocery store. Look out for the WIC labels in the aisles and hand your Georgia eWIC benefits card to the cashier at check-out. Find a list of authorized WIC vendors.

Breastfeeding Support

District 4 believes that making the decision to breastfeed is one of the best ways to feed your baby in their first year of life. Breastfeeding provides many health, nutritional, economical and emotional benefits to both mother and baby.

WIC provides support for mothers to help them through their breastfeeding journey. We will pair you with a breastfeeding peer counselor who can offer tips on holding, producing, latching, pumping and more.

Discussion Groups
WIC’s breastfeeding peer counselors lead a discussion group called Feed Your Infant (FYI). These meetings are a great way to interact with other moms eager to learn and hear from moms who have been there. The group discusses all your options for feeding your new baby, including breastfeeding and formula feeding. We make sure a nutritionist is available to answer questions about eating while pregnant and breastfeeding. The FYI group is open to moms, pregnant women, dads, grandparents, friends and anyone else who wants to support a mom and infant in their life.

Buddy Program
Breastfeeding helps to form a special bond between mother and baby, but support and encouragement from other moms can go a long way. After all, the combination of breastfeeding and having a newborn can be incredibly tough! That’s why WIC is now offering the Buddy Program — to help breastfeeding moms connect virtually or in person.

In this program, mothers are matched with other WIC moms for breastfeeding support through listening, sharing experiences, offering encouragement, and celebrating milestones. Through this program, you can form bonds that will last a lifetime.

You may already have a WIC peer counselor who can offer breastfeeding support, but having a buddy can add more to your existing support network. Your buddy may be facing similar challenges as you around the same time. She is there to listen, share experiences, encourage, and celebrate milestones, and to lean on you for support as well! You aren’t alone. Someone who is going through similar experiences is only a call away. Do you want to learn more? Click here for more information.

How to sign up:
Contact Tamika Campbell, Buddy Program Specialist at tamika.campbell@dph.ga.gov (762) 323-3444. Once she pairs you with another mom, you’ll review buddy expectations together and sign a buddy pledge.
